Being new to a place – coming in from the outside, so to say – can make you more aware of certain details that someone who’s grown up in said place may no longer notice. Nando Vivas is one such “outsider”. He hails from Extremadura, studied at Hamburg’s finest art school and managed to withstand the drizzly rain for a total of nine years before seeking refuge under Barcelona’s clear skies. Wagging your nationality about is still frowned upon in most parts of Germany, so imagine his surprise when he landed here some two years ago. We might no longer see them, but there’s hardly a building in this city that doesn’t wear an estelada – or a Venezuelan, Cuban, Portuguese or Spanish flag for that matter. Nando did notice, however, and began drawing. With the flags came the windows, the banisters, the shutters, the art deco, the 70s brick, the persianas, the washing lines and the aircons. He captured the small narratives Barcelona’s balconies tell, and some of her culture and her contradictions along with them.

¿Dónde imprimiste el libro?
En una copistería de mi barrio. Cuando se trata de autoedición hay que abaratar costes como sea. Hice la encuadernación yo mismo. Fue un trabajo difícil pero me encantó (bueno, tal vez solo los primeros 10 libros…).
¿Qué bandera hay en tu balcón?
La verdad es que ninguna, pero si tuviese que poner una pondría la de Moderdonia, del programa de radio La vida moderna. También me vale la republicana.
¿Te importa la política?
No soy catalán, ni tampoco tengo un orgullo nacional español. De todas formas, creo que cada pueblo debería tener derecho a decir su propio futuro.
Si tuvieras que dibujar una nueva bandera para Catalunya, ¿cómo sería?
En realidad la estelada me gusta bastante como diseño. También me encanta la (falsa) leyenda que cuenta que las cuatro barras rojas surgieron al pasar cuatro dedos ensangrentados de una mano por encima del escudo dorado del conde de Barcelona.
