We print this newspaper monthly. We send PDF files via an FTP program to a server in Lleida. Thousands of newspapers arrive on our doorstep the next day. Is there work involved? Oh, hell yes. But it doesn’t quite compare to what happens at Granja grafica. While Elies gives me the introduction, Gabriela prints posters on heavy, pricey Italian paper for a company that sells quality design prints to museums. She slides in paper, inks steel rollers that feed others that feed a main that then presses paper to letter with tinta in between. It’s simple, repetitive, meditative and insanely complex. She started at 15h. She finishes printing the 200th poster at about 21h. Then she cleans the machine. No PDF files, no server upload. This is letterpress, and it took her an entire afternoon to set the type. It’s what they do. It’s a step back in time and the most modern thing around: a return to manual, to a working rhythm dictated by more than your time-starved inner schizo.
