NEW ORLEANS PUSSYCATS
You haven’t seen buskers with personality until you’ve seen The New Orleans Pussycats—a three-piece with an old-school ragtime sound and some pretty mesmerising facial expressions.
We encountered them on Portal de l’Àngel and were drawn to their music, their spirit and, honestly, the way they looked. The three musicians make a pretty extraordinary looking group: catch them setting up or between songs and it’s hard to tell how this eccentric collaboration came together: Miha on piano is unassuming, perhaps a little dazed; Pepe is a shrinking older local whose nap schedule dictates the band’s working hours; and then there’s Miha on banjo and vocals: long hair tied back and always with a fold-up bike in tow, you’re not sure what to expect, and then he starts to sing with a voice that could be streaming straight from a gramophone.
Filming and getting to know the New Orleans Pussycats was full of surprises, not least of all the love/hate relationship they have with arguably their fourth member. We watched them pushing around this haggard old upright piano with what we thought was affection. Actually, they told us, “it’s a pain in the ass!”
In the crowds that inevitably gather around this mismatched gang, you see Miha’s uninhibited facial contortions reflected—everyone from tiny toddlers to old timers dance freely, and you’re reminded that music creates in you a feeling you can’t describe. As Miha puts it, it’s just “that moment”.

CARMEN
A la vida, com al tango, és possible trencar les barreres dels rols imposats per la societat. La Carmen, professora de tango mexicana emigrada a Barcelona, explica la seva experiència de vida i de ball i com va començar a ensenyar el canvi de rol, que permet al ballarí expressar la seva identitat en plena llibertat i fluïdesa.
La Carmen va viure la seva adolescència en una societat on «els homes són masclistes però les dones també»; però ja des de petita ballava amb dones, o sigui amb les seves germanetes en les festes del seu poble. La seva reflexió sobre els rols que imposa la societat als homes i a les dones, independentment del seu sexe, remunta a aquesta època.
La seva decisió d’ensenyar a les dones a ballar com a líders i als homes a ballar com a seguidors, i de crear la primera milonga de Tango Queer de Barcelona, no és una reivindicació política o social sinó una simple necessitat de mostrar la importància de la fluïdesa de genere.
Vivim en una societat on hi ha una por constant de no ser acceptats, on baratem les nostres esperances amb la certesa d’un rol predeterminat. En una societat on la por al desconegut és tan forta, arrisquem renunciar a la nostra identitat sense adornar-nos-en. És vital que estiguem en constant conversa sobre els rols que ens són imposats per reconèixer-nos i descobrir-nos a nosaltres mateixos amb més creativitat i autenticitat.

EMILI
“You have to meet Emili,” a pair of up-cycling fanatics told me. “He’s a carpenter who makes these intricate sculptures out of tiny wooden blocks. He likes to meet new people, and if you have a project in mind he’ll teach you the skills you need to help you make it.” Emili sounded like a nice man, but I wasn’t sure how well he fitted the brief for Héroes Anónimos. “Oh,” they added, “and he’s more or less blind.”
Though you might not notice it at first (he’ll tell you that he can see you, but he couldn’t describe the details of your face), clues of Emili’s failing sight are scattered all around his tiny Poble Sec workshop—particularly glaring are all of the huge magnifying glasses that are rigged up eccentrically above each piece of machinery.
We were fascinated by Emili from the start. Yes it was quirky that somebody would continue this type of work despite such eyesight deterioration that they can no longer read the books they were once an avid collector of—so far gone that they can no longer see the Sagrada Familia from their city-scape terrace. More than that, though, Emili’s work is eccentric and incredible. Not incredible for someone who can’t see well—just incredible. And perhaps that’s what surprised us most about him—Emili doesn’t really consider his sight loss a factor in his ability, and it doesn’t feature heavily in his philosophies of life. Generous with his time, know-how and homemade limoncello, Emili shares anything he’s able to—visually or not.

DREA
El Roller Derbi és un esport de contacte en patins en el qual dos equips de patinadors s’enfronten en una pista el·líptica en una competició de velocitat, tècnica i estratègia.
Sembla un esport agressiu, per a les dones fortes; però ho és realment?
La Drea és una dona canadenca que ha trobat en aquest esport una raó per somriure i un lloc per sentir-se plenament acceptada i per expressar-se amb llibertat. Ella ens explica la unió i el respecte que hi ha darrere d’aquest esport, i la relació que s’ha creat en el seu equip, que s’ha convertit en la seva nova família.
És un esport dur, en el que caus, en el que s’enfronten les teves pors, i en el que et pots trencar un dit o un turmell, però permet demostrar que sempre és possible aixecar-se de nou, i sorprendre’s per la seva pròpia força.
El Roller Derby és un esport per a totes les dones, tant per a les més magres com per a les més rodones, prescindint de la seva edat i de la seva orientació sexual. La diversitat és una riquesa i qualsevol pot formar part d’aquesta comunitat on es respecta la individualitat per sobre de tot.
