It should come as no surprise that the more equal a society, the happier its citizens. Social cohesion and life expectancy increase and and the population finds itself healthier, with fewer hospitals, which frees up funds for those at risk of social exclusion and so on and so forth until everybody lives, content, to the tender age of 95. Right? ¡Ojalá! Directing resources to the poorest seems to be a Sisyphean task. With the 2008 crisis, –as with every economic crisis, really– inequality increased. Locally, this translates into people dying significantly younger in Ciutat Vella than up in Pedralbes.
