Last Monkey chef, Stefano Mazza, Italian, and formerly an industrial designer, decided to swap out design for food at the age of 30 and honed his culinary craft at ESHOB over in Poblenou. Now he’s popping out Asian tapas just up Borrell from the Mercat de Sant Antoni. Aren’t cities fun? The Last Monkey concept is clear, if similar to one popularized by Casa Xica, entre altres: Asian flavours in platillo format reinterpreted with mediterranean touches. The food is ace and the prices are fair. They’ll tell you to try to the berenjenas. They’re right. Our first four dishes killed it. The “mains”, curries and such, could be smoother, but the rice balances them out. And the desserts were lovely, a nice surprise. All of that and the best soundtrack in Barcelona (Is that “Nnuff” by Masta Ace? Oooooohhhhhh!!) and we’re sold. This spot is balanced. Street, fair, tasty, sin pretensiones.
