This month I’m in the mood for something loud, and what better way to say farewell to easy breezy beach vibes than by going “punky”, right? So, let’s start with highly amplified things first.
For those feeling nostalgic for teenage-style head banging and jumping around, on the 4th Meteoro offers a healthy dose of garage punk and rock’n’roll by Les Lullies and Boyle Heights – simple, loud, catchy, rude and unapologetic. For a slightly more polished, but in no way softer version of the racket, head back to the same venue on the 26th for a night of distorted alt rock with Melbourne’s Deaf Wish.
Climbing up the the distortion ladder, fans of a more lo-fi shoegaze type of evening should visit Freedonia on the 12th to see the German band Shun, in town to present their debut EP. They will appear with the local guitar and drum duo the Olsen Twinz, who accompany their German brothers on their first tour through Spain. Expect an evening filled with melancholic guitar melodies and loud drums.
Last but not least, Havana Cultura is coming to Marula Café on the 20th to introduce their new album ¡Súbelo, Cuba!, recorded at the beginning of this year. The project, which began in 2007 and is sponsored by the rum giant Havana Club, was created to support and showcase contemporary Cuban artists. It really took off in 2009 when Havana Cultura (and Club) invited British DJ Gilles Peterson to visit Cuba to see what he’d make of the local scene. The result? Una mezcla de todo, representing the urban sounds of modern-day Havana while paying homage to the island’s Afro-Cuban tradition. Havana Cultura has it all: electronic music, hip hop, kuduro and much more, culminating in a beautiful and freewheeling statement of Cuba today, a mix of past and future promising to take you on a true musical journey.
