No one is reinventing the wheel here. On Café is neither Scandinavian design innovation nor is it gastro-anything, thank god. But they do a wicked tortilla de patata. The café is charming, simple, light and filled with fun bits and bobs that further the friendly ambience created by the people who work there. Itty-bitty penguins live south of a globe, wooden men adorn cookie jars, and fresh, fluffy, homemade scones sit under a cake display (the last time you saw fresh scones in your local bar, por eso?).

On is friendly and real and has a very large terrace that will be getting serious sun from midday, um, On. Take note of that and the fact that it’s open on Sundays from 11-14h. Now, mentally register the empanada + pintxo de truita + salad or patatas bravas for €6.50 and, to top it all off, order the empanada de morcilla or de pollo con curry and realize, all of a sudden, that you are eating, debatably (cause you know there’ll be debate), one of the best empanadas in Barcelona ciudad. (Yeah, I said it.)
