Most of us can slap this one into our Barcelona classics list without reading another sentence. But for the rest, don’t bother if you’re A) anti-fritanga, B) a design addict, cause there’s none of that here or C) if you’re a hard-line Catalan, ‘cause this is a Cruzcampo bar through and through, if you get my meaning.

Araceli and Paolo, cousins from Jerez and Brazil respectively, have been working together in Barna for four decades. They haven’t changed their formula because it’s working: “Pide tú la cerveza, que el pescaito lo pongo yo!” This current incarnation of Capritxo is their fourth and largest to date, and they’re looking to traspasar and upgrade once again. But it’s more than just pescadito; it’s mind-blowing. Go in and order a caña, mediana or vino (blanc pescador or a whole range of reds) for two euros and they’ll put down mejillones in the half shell and damn good gambas. Order another caña and you’re getting fried boquerones, big ones. Round three is a heaping plate of the famous pescadito (real chanquetes!). Ask Araceli for her homemade spicy sauce (pica de verdad). Then thank her again and again for waking up every other day to haul herself to Mercabarna to buy fresh fish that only 40 years of experience could guide you to.
