I’ve often thought that music, like the food on sale at traditional markets, should be seasonal. Of course you could listen to Calypso all year round if you wanted, but that doesn’t accompany the climes of an oceanic sub-polar city, which provides the perfect conditions for a black metal scene to flourish. Whilst we hardly enjoy the bleak winter months of a city like Bergen, it still feels right to honor our bescarved experiences of December cum January, punctuated, per cert, with the annual release that is New Years’ Eve.

If you dig your sounds futuristic, then no night will push the envelope quite like the weekly Saturday residency at RAZZMATAZZ named Trill. On December 17th they present the sounds of Sweat Taste crew, founded by Mark Luva and Vision. Their cuts are cold, drawing inspiration from the London Eski Style, combined with industrial sounds drawn from their hometown and a post-4/4 attitude to genre blending. Skip through the teens of the past and join the teens of the future in the Sala Rex.

On a more righteous tip, the AMEBA association are putting together a day of music, also on the 17th: Ameba Xmas Music Day at UTOPIA 126 in Poblenou. To gain entry to the promised land of label stalls, workshops, a design market and even vinyl cleaning service, visitors are asked to bring a wrapped present, which will be donated to El Casal dels Infants. There will be DJs, booze and food to make the trip out to this amazing industrial space worth one’s while.

As usual, promoters are keeping their New Years’ line ups and locations under wraps for the time being, but keep an eye on the moves of Discos Paradiso, Colectivo Secreto and Club Marabu, and get your tickets early. Bon any!
